In 2020 James Nestor released his book Breath – The New Science of a Lost Art. This book shone a light on the issue of breathing dysfunction.
It is estimated that one in two people may have some form of breathing dysfunction.
The following conditions can be an indicator of a breathing dysfunction, these include:
- asthma
- snoring
- insomnia
- sleep
- apnoea
- high blood pressure
- panic attacks
- fatigue
- anxiety
- coughing
- breathlessness
- rhinitis allergies
- impaired concentration
- teeth grinding
- reflux
- restless legs
Buteyko breathing methods assist in retraining dysfunctional breathing.
Buteyko methods are focused on the understanding that open mouthed breathing and over-breathing disturbs the balance of carbon dioxide levels in the body. Buteyko Breathing Training sessions are offered by Nicole Murray in the Sydney area at the Breathing Matters website.
